I have to admit to suppressing a little chuckle when the band appeared on stage wearing very kitch 70’s outfits for the first set.

Deepest purple cover the Ian Gillan and the David Coverdale era’s of Deep Purple albeit with the same line up.

Starting the night off with the classic speed king and highway star, a couple of the band members wearing wigs for authenticity, they almost looked the part! However it was the sound of deep purple that the near full house had come to hear, and they were not to be disappointed, this band gave a masterclass of demonstrating their musical talents, the vocal abilities and range of lead singer Kevin McGillian being tested to the full right through the night and he was not found wanting. Richie Blackmore being played by Neil Priddey was excellent all night as were Tim Campling as Roger Glover/ Glen Hughes on Bass, Stu Armstrong as Jon Lord on keys and Steve Shaddy as Ian Paice on drums.

The only downside to the performance was a little problem with the sound mixing throughout the night, which was being done by Stu who was trying to mix whilst playing the keyboards, But overall it was a job well done.

The band continued in the authenticity mode with “Richie” apparently not wanting to play woman from Tokyo as the original Richie thought it was too commercial, but it was all very tongue in cheek and was part of creating a fun evening.

Throughout the evening the audience thrilled to a run down of most of purples classic tracks, part way through the evening switching from Gillan Mode to Coverdale performing for a total of just over 2 hours non-stop, Audience participation was, of course essential, with most people joining in the chorus’s of the better known songs, particularly the grand finale smoke on the water, with everyone giving their all, being encouraged, or more like ordered to sing the intro too J

This was a great evening’s entertainment by a very capable band with a touch for recreating the original sounds of Deep Purple, dunno about the dodgy 70’s look though
